What is Data integrity?

The accuracy and consistency of stored data, indicated by an absence of any alteration in data between two updates of a data record. Data integrity is imposed within a database at its design stage through the use of standards rules and procedures, and is maintained through the use of error checking and validation routines.
OR
The records represent what "actually happened", Data integrity is the degree to which data is completed, consistent and accurate and is maintained throughout the data life ie., from collecting data, processing and maintaining the data in a secure manner. The data may be recorded through electronic paper formats or a combination of both.
